How do you file an assignment of judgment?

Not verified. We did not find an New Jersey statute or statewide court form that sets out how an assignment of judgment is filed. In practice, assignees commonly file a signed, notarized assignment of judgment with the clerk of the court that entered the judgment, but procedure varies by court. Confirm with that clerk or counsel.

Do judgment buyers and collectors need a license?

No one may operate a collection agency or collect, or solicit the right to collect, accounts for others in New Jersey unless a sufficient bond is on file with the Secretary of State (N.J.S.A. 45:18-1). Whether a particular judgment buyer collecting its own judgments falls under this rule should be confirmed with counsel.
