Sell a court judgment in Pennsylvania
Last updated:
Short answer: In Pennsylvania, as in most states, a money judgment can usually be sold by assigning it to a buyer. Before you sell, check how much enforceable life the judgment has left, how interest accrues, and how the assignment is recorded. Facts below are marked verified only where we checked an official source.

How long does a judgment last, and can it be renewed?
An action to revive a judgment lien on real property must be commenced within five years (42 Pa.C.S. § 5526(1)), so a judgment lien must be revived on that cycle to keep its priority.

What is the post-judgment interest rate?
Judgments bear interest at the "lawful rate" (42 Pa.C.S. § 8101), which is 6% a year under 41 P.S. § 202, as Pennsylvania appellate courts have confirmed (e.g., Equitable Gas Co. v. Wade, Pa. Super. 2002).

How do you file an assignment of judgment?
For a magisterial district court judgment, the assignee produces an assignment of judgment on the prescribed form, executed by the original plaintiff; the judge then dockets the assignment and issues an amended notice of judgment, and the original plaintiff has no further rights (Pa. R.C.P.M.D.J. 401.1). If the judgment was entered in the court of common pleas, the assignment is filed with that county's prothonotary instead.

Do judgment buyers and collectors need a license?
Not verified. We did not confirm whether Pennsylvania requires a license, registration or bond to buy or collect judgments. Check with the state financial regulator or counsel; federal FDCPA rules may also apply to consumer judgments.
