Sell private student loan portfolios
Last updated:
Short answer: Only private (non-federal) student loans are sold in the debt market. Federal Direct Loans are owned by the U.S. Department of Education and cannot be sold by schools or servicers. Schools with institutional loans and private lenders can sell charged-off private student loans.
What should sellers consider first?
- Documentation and chain of title have been central to litigation over private student loan collection.
- Some states have student loan servicer or borrower bill-of-rights laws.
- Schools must not withhold transcripts as a collection tool where state or federal rules prohibit it. Check current rules.

What else do sellers ask?
Can a college sell its institutional student loans?
Generally yes for institutional (non-federal) loans, subject to state law and the loan agreements. Federal loans cannot be sold this way.
What do charged-off private student loans sell for?
Public data is thin. One 2025 industry post cited about 4.5 cents for a charged-off student/alternative loan pool, a single unverified example.
